The first phase of a master-plan commissioned by Edgbaston High School to introduce new facilities comprises a multi-use performance space designed to accommodate theatre, dance, music and a range of other activities, including assembly and examinations.
In order to provide the necessary versatility the building is equipped with electronically controlled multi-level staging and retractable seating for an audience of 600. When the seating and staging are not in use, the building provides clear open space for a range of other activities. The building is fully equipped as a self-contained auditorium with a foyer, visitor toilet and catering facilities, and changing rooms and a sound and lighting studio at back-of-house.
Sixth Form Centre
The second phase of Edgbaston High School’s master-plan involved the remodeling and extension of the main frontage block – a complex exercise in terms of providing temporary accommodation and addressing health and safety issues to allow the school to continue to function. There are also conservation issues involved in all our projects for the school because of the neighbouring Historic England registered Botanical Gardens and associated listed buildings.
A new façade has consolidated a number of unattractive buildings, and a new entrance, lift and atrium has improved access for people with reduced mobility. The remodelled library within the original structure has been integrated into the new extension, which provides a new IT suite, teaching spaces, private study areas and catering facilities. Internal communal spaces and external terraces are designed to encourage interaction between students and extra-curricular activities.
Pre- Preparatory School
The scheme for the Octagon includes a new suite of classrooms for the Pre-prep School. The accommodation is spacious and provides open plan teaching areas that are completely flexible and can combine all the activities under one roof.
Changing and office facilities for staff are included within the suite and particular attention has been given to the anchilary spaces including toilet accommodation, which has the same attention to design and detail as the classroom areas. Robust fixtures and fittings and hard wearing materials are used throughout the facility. The suite opens onto a terrace for outdoor activities.
